St. Ambrose of Milan, Church Father (d. 397 A.D.)

Let us hear the eloquent Bishop of Milan, whose lucid exposition of Catholic truth dissipated the prejudices and errors of Augustin, and prepared his heart for the triumph of divine grace over pride and passion. In his commentary on the fortieth Psalm, Ambrose says"This is that Peter to whom Christ saith: 'Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church'. THEREFORE WHERE PETER IS THERE IS THE CHURCH, there death is not, but life eternal: and therefore He added: 'and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it: and I will give unto thee the keys of the  kingdom of heaven.' Blessed Peter, against whom the gate of hell did not prevail, and the gate of heaven was not closed ! on the contrary, he destroyed the porches of hell, and laid open those of heaven: therefore, whilst on earth, he opened heaven, and closed hell." ("The Primacy of the Apostolic See, Vindicated", p. 52, by Bp. Francis Kenrick, 1848)
